What is a Low Fod Map Diet?
The Low Fod Map Diet was created for those with chronic IBS symptoms. FOMAP stands for Fermentable Oligo-, Dis-, Monosaccharides, and Polysaccharides. These are carbs that are known to be poorly absorbed by the body and cause lead to digestive issues in some individuals with a weak gut or immune system. Symptoms from these foods can include abdominal pain, intestinal cramping, bloating, chronic constipation, chronic diarrhea, nausea and more.
What are the Benefits of a Low Fod Map Diet?
The main benefits of a Low Fod Map Diet are to help reduce digestive symptoms as an individual undergoes testing to find and address root causes, as well as works on rebuilding their individual gut health. While some High Fod Map Foods may need to be avoided indefinitely, the Low Fod Map Diet should not be followed long term. If an individual addresses the real root causes and works on rebuilding gut health, most High Fod Map food options should once again be better tolerated in moderation.
